Borovets, Ski Bulgaria
|
 Borovets is the oldest and the biggest mountain resort in Bulgaria. It is located 1350 above sea level on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountains among age-old pine woods, at the foot of peak Mousala (2925 m) the highest on the Balkan peninsula. Borovets is easily accessible, being at a distance of 73 km from Sofia. The nearest town is Samokov, which is 10 km from the resort.
Borovets is a resort of alpine type and provides excellent opportunities for a whole range of winter sports. The resort has twice hosted World Cup Alpine skiing rounds. Its biathlon track is one of the best in the world. The slopes of Borovets have a permanent snow cover from November to May, more than 1.5 m thick. The air in Borovets is crystal - clear and free of any pollutants. The average temperature during the coldest month, January, is -4.6 � C.
The ski runs of various difficulty are suitable for anybody even beginners. The slopes and runs are maintained in perfect condition and are designed with international markings and multilingual signs.
Apres Ski
Apr�s-ski in Borovets is excellent value. Popular activities include folklore evenings, fondues, sleigh rides, bowling, karaoke - in fact, something for every taste. Discos and nightclubs can be found in the village as well as some hotels.
Excursions are available locally including a trip to the capital city of Sofia and the fascinating 10th Century monastery at Rila which is filled with beautiful frescoes and wood carvings.
Ski runs
Beginners
Borovets has two main nursery areas, one just 20m from the Hotel Rila and the second at over 2000m, accessible by gondola, ideal if snow conditions deteriorate at resort level. Within a few days most beginners are ready to progress on to the more challenging slopes of the Sitnyakovska chairlift.
Intermediates
Most runs here are ideally suited to the intermediate skier, with some enjoyable runs sweeping down through the trees in the Yastrebets area. From the top of the gondola in Borovets at 2363m , you will find numerous interesting descents.
Advanced
The World Cup area reached by the 6-seater gondola offers the most testing skiing in Borovets and there are two challenging runs on the Yastrebets area for the more advanced skier.
Snowboarding
The gentle slopes are ideal for mastering the basics, however first-timers may find the many drag lifts difficult to cope with.
